Freaks: Alive on the Inside by Annette Curtis-Klause -- Cool story, even cooler illustrated cover. Basically about this late-teenaged guy who grew up with freaks in a circus and decided to run away from home in search of love and riches. Favorite aspects: He periodically contacted his lover through lucid dreaming via a scarab ring given to him by gypsies. And, oh yeah, his lover was a mummy, which lead to interesting plots. Quite an original book. Had a nice Arabian/Western flavor. A possible reread.
Unfortunate Events #4, The Miserable Mill by Lemony Snicket -- I know, I know. It's a childrens book, O.K.! They're my books to read when I need a quick little break to cleanse my mind. They're so straight-forward and quick-paced that it's over before I have a chance to dislike it. It's fresh. I like fresh. I mean, how could someone with a name like Lemony Snicket not write fresh stories? And he makes me laugh occasionally. Like, actually laughing out loud. Not many books do that. Might reread, when bored.
Ouran High School Host Club Vol. 11+12 -- I laughed by effing ass off the entire time reading this. How could I not? Enough said. Will reread inevitably.
Princess Diaries #8, Princess on the Brink by Meg Cabot -- I LOVE THESE BOOKS TO DEATH. I know they sound stupid at first, and I know Disney made a lame movie that barely has to do with the books, but they really are great. I've grown up with them and they have grown with me... In this one, Mia is about to have sex (for the first time) with her boyfriend to keep him from moving to Tsukuba, Japan for a year to develope a machine that contributed to closed-chest heart surgery. She felt it was a very wrong thing to do (you know, taunting him with sex to keep him close), but seeing how she's grown more and more corrupt throughout the series that makes sense that she would stoop so low as to put out for her boyfriend because he's "taking so many cold showers". She ends up finding out something horrible about him and his past relationship and it completely throws her off, with lots of screaming and tretchery. Aha. Quite a read. I couldn't put it down. Definite reread, without a doubt.
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson -- I picked this up because a few years ago I saw a Lifetime movie of the same name made after it and loved it. The book turned out to be pretty good as well, in a different way. It was a quick read with a very unbiased rendition of high school life, abusive parents, rape situations, cynical depression, and alienation. A depressing read, but it had very profound moments and made very clear points that may have benefitted my psyche. A poetic sort of book, though not true poetry. Funny occasionally. A possible reread.
